English Proficiency for International Students

Acceptable Test Scores Waiving Test Scores

No single factor in the consideration for admission will be more important than a student's ability to read, write, speak and understand the English language. Course work at The Catholic University of America requires university-level English language proficiency and skills. The Catholic University of America, therefore, requires all applicants whose native language is not English to take the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) or an International English Language Testing System (IELTS) exam before they can be considered for final admission. Students should have their test results sent directly to The Catholic University of America. More information can be located at:

When/How Can test Scores be Waived?

The Toefl/IELTS requirements can be waived, if one of the following apply:

1) The successful completion of a Bachelor's Degree (B.A. or B.S), an Associates Degree (A.A.) or a high school diploma from an accredited U.S. academic institution. (Graduates from a U.S. high school, however, are required to submit SAT/ACT scores.)

2) The successful completion, with a B or above, in a college-level English Composition class which is determined to be the equivalent of or more advanced than CUA's English Composition 101 course. (At the Undergraduate level, this review is done on a case-by-case basis by the Office of Admissions with consultation from the School of Arts and Sciences when necessary.)

3) The successful completion, with documentation, of CUA's Intensive English Program. Students must submit documentation of successful completion and apply to a degree seeking program through the Office of University Admissions.

4) The successful completion of an intensive English program, with documentation, offered by an ELS Language Center.
