The Catholic University of America

Summer Study

The Catholic University of America offers various classes over the summer that individuals can take. Individuals in visitor status (B-1, B-2, WB or WT) may take a single class for fun while in the U.S. at a visitor and do not need to hold F-1 or J-1 student status. However, anyone planning to make more than a class may need to change their status before they can legally take classes. Individuals in F-2 status cannot study in the U.S. For the most part, CUA does not sponsor students for F-1 status during the summer since the university does not offer a full course of study during this period. There are exceptions to this. I-20s are issued for students enrolling in Intensive English Program and in certain academic programs in the School of Canon Law and in the School of Theology where the degree-granting programs are only offfered during the summer and students return each summer to work on their degrees.

CUA will not sponsor individuals for student visas who just wish to take a class or two with no professional objective. CUA also has exchange agreements with several universities. If you are participating in a specific, proscribed course of study over the summer, CUA may be able to sponsor you for J-1 status.

Students needing a student visa for summer study should complete a J-1 request form for summer study and return it either to International Student and Scholar Services or to the Office of Summer programs.
