State Tax Filing Obligations

If you earned income last year, you may also be required to file tax forms with the state where you live.

Maryland

You must file a Maryland State tax return if:

  • You lived in Maryland for 6 months or more and
  • Have earned at least $9,350 or more

Virginia

You need to file a Virginia tax form if you live in the state:

  • You must file form VA 760R if:
    • You lived in Virginia for more than 183 days (in of the prior calendar year) and
    • Earned $11,250 or more
  • You must file form VA 760PY if:
    • You lived in Virginia for less than 183 days (in of the prior calendar year) and
    • Earned $11,250 or more

Washington, DC

If you live in Washington, DC and earned any income, you must file a DC tax return. DC tax forms are available at libraries and post offices in Washington, DC or on the web at: http://otr.cfo.dc.gov/
